General Walton Harris Walker said exactly the same thing in June 1950, a few days before the Korean War!
First of all, let's see what General Pace declared very recently. Robert Burns wrote the report which was posted/published by The Guardian:
www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,,-6168964,00.html [October 25, 2006]
I personally read General Walkers interview (in Kowloon, Hong Kong), it was published in Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, early in June 1950. He claimed that the American and South Korean armies could easily defeat the North Korean army!
Let's read what was reported a few months later:
"....However, the quality of the Allied forces remained deficient and the North Koreans held the initiative...."

Senhor Rozario,
General Pace is correct. Comparing his statement of today with Gereral Walker's in 1950 without comparing the combat capability of the military at each time is comparing apples to oranges. General Pace also said something else very true. Any war in Korea, with or without the intelligence assets, will still be an ugly mess. I can't think of anybody who wants to see a war in Korea including me. I almost did that one back in 1976. This would be worse.
That puts the decision on Mr. Kim's shoulders. I don't believe that Mr. Kim wants war and the PRC certainly doesn't. That does not mean that at some time in the future he may not see war as the greatest evil but as the lesser of several. In the end, SoDamn Insane turned out to be a coward. We know very little about Mr. Kim's level of personal courage and even less about his thought processes. We don't know how much control the military has over him. The PRC lost a major espoinage ring in the DPRK. Tha may well have contributed to their reaction to the nuclear test and the 20 minute warning.
There is no doubt that we can destroy the DPRK. I would not put my stock in comparisons that are 50 years apart.

bigbird,
An interesting comparison ....apples & oranges, I like both, they taste a little different but it would hace been better if you had chosen a 'paper tiger' and a 'real jaguar'.
Half a century ago North Korea & China had a weak army, today they are much stronger.
50 years ago China had no nuclear weapons, today China and N. Korea do!
Well, I think the relation of forces today are quite even. I think Russia will back China & North Korea.....therefore I don't think that America will attack N.Korea again.
South Korea wants peace in the region, so do China, Russia & North Korea.
"An apple a day may keep war away".....just a joke!
Send millions of apples to KIM ! His 'hungry' soldiers will enjoy eating them.
The relation of forces today in ASIA is at par.

Senhor Rozario,
You should recheck your correlation of forces. The ROK military is also much stronger.

Well, the two of you can "STAND DOWN" and "STOW" the bluster. Not the US or N/Korea or both are going to start anything dimly related to war or an offensive action anywhere on the Korean peninsula, at least not in this century.

Robster,
I certainly hope not. A lot depends upon the effect of the hunger pains in Mr. Kim's stomach and those of the KPA. Article on BBC at news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6079110.stm is something not seen for a while. DPRK's continuing famine is no secret. However, it does not make the open news very often. Nor does it often mention cuts in food aid to the DPRK. Even though the language is relatively mild, any public bad news about the DPRK is cause for some alarm. Saving what remains of Mr. Kim's face is viewed as not increasing the pressure on the regime.
Mr. Kim has always been able to count at the very least on the PRC and the ROK to supplement whatever the annual harvest produced. Even before the Summer typhoons there was some question of this year's yields based upon the failure of the ROK to provide the usual amount of fertilizer. Now there is some question in my mind as to the amount of food that the DPRK and the ROK will provide. The PRC leadership is at least publically pissed at Mr. Kim. They are telegraphing their expectations of the Winter migration across the Yalu by building real fences and sending first line units to the border area.
We can listen to all the bluster and threats coming from the DPRK and say it is all the usual stuff. Most of it is. Actions speak louder than words and the PRC's actions speak the loudest of all. Whatever intelligence we can develop on the food shipments will tell the story. I do now believe that the PRC has hit its limits with Mr. Kim. The destruction of their intelligence network by the DPRK did not help. The PRC must now become used to being as blind to the intentions of the DPRK as the rest of the world at least for a while.
Cornered animals do strange things. Mr. Kim is pretty well cornered and he knows it. Stay tuned.

Haven't you been paying attention to domestic political events?
The shows over and the curtain has dropped on the boob act in the W/H. There are no October surprises as neo's and that goof on the other board predicted, except a republican rout on 7 November and George crawling on his belly for mercy from a one-time denied & recently rediscovered god & savior, James Baker the III.
This has got to be a bad time for you, as disappointing and unwanted as what it was for me when all this shi*t started a little over 5 years ago. You will survive.

Robster,
It is not a bad time for me. Business could be better but I will survive. I am not a Republican so don't care as much about party politics as some. Leaving most domestic issues aside, the issues of war and peace are the most important and most formidable. Between a boob named Gore and a boob named Bush, which is the worst? If you want competent people in elective office, you must make such office attractive to competent people.
The curtain has not dropped. Mr. Kim is still standing center stage. Whether or not you agree with the invasion of Iraq and the subsequent actions, the DPRK is a whole different animal. Short of the abject surrender of the DPRK, there will be war. Such surrender is not likely.
A Democratic Congress may well defund Iraq. They may be overcome by events in Korea.

The main gig today is the US extracting her sorry ass from 2 doomed fights in S/W Asia, where Russia, China and Iran love grinding our noses in it, while Europe and the rest of the world watch. Our real enemy al Qaeda is trying to take advantage of the situation, but is not a long term power player in the Iraqi end game.
The US is obsessed with managing what later 20th century Americans are famous for after they have "<u><b>F</u></b>**ked <u><b>U</u></b>p <u><b>B</u></b>eyound <u><b>A</u></b>ll <u><b>R</u></b>ecognition"...cutting and running. Exactly what shape that takes remains to be seen and will likely have to be executed by better & more competant men & women such as can be found in the ISG.
Its been a long time coming, but finally a majority in the 'establishment' recognise that George requires careful, direct supervision beyond his inner circle of enablers, demo & repub parties, especially the republican party. No one however, can save the English language from George's verbal mangling of it, torturing us all with his ill usage & bumbling styles, but one sure as hell can save the country!
