Well how long do we live like this???
Well, I've never really paid attention to The Edge since there was a Spengler forum, but I believe the Edge was down for around a month -- does anyone have better info on when the Edge originally went down? One might assume the same down time for Spengler's forum as what The Edge recently experienced.
I remember seeing items about it on the tech issues forum, but for the life of me can't remember how long the edge was down. It's odd to have a back up forum that no one has arrived at quite yet. I had to fish the email about this out of my spam folder for some reason so I wonder how many people just don't have access since the passwords were not the same as users had assigned them. There may be a few folks who just can't simply log on and decided to go hang out somewhere else.

Howdy Hoosiernorm,
At least the Edge is easy to subscribe. So, maybe the others will come here. I've heard from Total Issues, and he is coping, like me reading a book. But I think that by Monday or Tuesday there will be some type of response from our Spengler.
Or at least Collingwood would let us know.
Have a happy Memorial Day you Vets out there.
Ciao

It's weird that the new address doesn't work either. You can still read what he blogged over here
I wonder what they are trying to do with his forum?
Just speculating, but I suspect that Spengler's forum will become more appropriate for alternative audiences. Spengler has mentioned that the forum was like a rowdy crowd in a bar, and he's looking for more of a quiet, thoughtful discussion. I would guess that the membership will be more like Dunedain's, more serious posters interested in religious discussions, although I'm not sure new members would have to be approved the same way -- that would defeat the purpose of building an audience.
I do think based on the last few weeks of the Spengler board that some effort to reduce the number of posters was underway. Nearly every poster that argued in an anti-semitic or anti-religious viewpoint was either banned or disappeared toward the end, along with posters like myself who never posted in the heavy religious topics -- I simply stopped receiving email updates to threads I followed, and when I switched email addresses thinking it was a spam filter issue, I was locked out. Also, registration instructions were withheld from new users.
The two or three dozen Spenglerians left at the end all posted regulary to the topics where Spengler himself frequented the most. I suspect this was no accident, but an effort to get the membership down to a core group of solid posters who will be invited to make the transition to the new forum, which will probably be more religious in nature. I would be surprised if there were a Foo board, a Pit, or even any room for Current Events unless approached from a certain angle. IMHO, the board will reflect Spengler's interests and topics he would like to discuss, in addition to discussion of his current blogs and essays.
Just my opinion, we'll have to wait and see.

Considering what the admin wrote here:
www.atimes.net/To-the-Webmaster/170286-W...-Spengler-forum.html
It may just go back to being a blog only on first things and just the edge for discussions on writings between random purveyors. I just wish that the edge had the same opportunity to host the expat bar as well. There were always interesting items posted by the really interesting people there. Heck I should have registered with his financial blog before this all started, I had a question about his post about No Bankruptcy, Not Yet. And can not register there for some reason. Just gotta wait for now.
ps. The email notification thing was board wide. I just thought it was a glitch myself.

wow. Not having regular internet access for a week does make a difference. so the whole forum goes belly up?
I was in fact expecting something like this after his sudden expose. But i suppose he'll get back if we start nagging him enough - unless Spengler/Goldman is really too busy with First Things and Inner Workings.

Booklady is probably right about two Spengler forums, but the ATol version will depend on the continued publication of the Spengler column in ATol. The issue is not clear at this time.

Oddly enough, I felt a bit lost myself when I couldn't log in -- the board was like a community of friends in a bar coming and going. With any luck, maybe we'll get back to normal shortly, although what Acquicke had to say above and here www.atimes.net/To-the-Webmaster/170286-W...m/Page-2.html#170334 I'm not so sure.
I enjoyed many of the regular posters -- Booklady, Izzy, Berserk Savant, Colonel Sun and yourself plus a couple dozen others. It was a bit frustrating that I couldn't post for the last few weeks, although I didn't get much time to spend on the board and usually liked to do a bit of research before posting.
There was one thread I had wanted to jump into probably in early May that I regret missing out on while I couldn't post. I don't remember the title at this point, but you, Hoosiernorm, made a post praising the virtues of the simpler, small town life -- things like friends or neighbors stopping to help if you were broke down on the side of the road, knowing all your neighbors, etc., stated expertly and exactly as I would have which received some static from OP and Bronski. Turns out that you and I share some background -- we grew up in the same small town, but a couple of states apart PMs welcome, if you're interested in details.
My comment would have been about the mindset that laughs at small town life. I associate the concept of "Utopia" generally with the idealism of the left, always looking for government to improve their lives. I personally believe there is no Utopia -- life has always been hard and will always be hard, and if it ever gets easier, it's the nature of man to make things difficult and find other problems (like groups that worry about rescuing pets during natural disasters, must mean we have rescuing people down cold). The life one finds in small town middle America is hard, but is probably as close to Utopia as you can get. Instead of relying on government to take care of us, we have family, friends and community -- I can't tell you how many fundraisers I've attended for friends and people in the community who needed help with medical bills or the community that needed funds for some project, or the KC's, American Legion or VFW for some worthy local cause where we could help ourselves.
To me, that's what life is supposed to be -- people helping each other, with the freedom and means to do so. Try having a fundraiser in a system with confiscatory tax rates that limits the freedom to do what you'd like with your income. Odd to me that the posters who lambasted you for your post were both liberals, OP from Seattle and Bronski from New York (I believe): both big city liberals. They're scoffing at the very idea of "community" that exists in small town America (and no doubt elsewhere in the world) not really understanding that it's probably the closest thing to Utopia that mankind will ever see.

Hello to the various Spengler posters.
Well, it's Spengler's board so he can do with it as he sees fit.
However, it would be unfortunate if Spengler could not tolerate and/or appreciate the value of a board that is like a "rowdy bar". After all, he can preach to the converted at First Things.
Anyways, I'll think about posting to the Edge as I value the ATimes.

Never criticize a man until you've walked several kilometres in his shoes. Because
1. You're now several kilometres away; and
2. You've got his shoes.
