Europe's tragedy, and Europe's tragedian 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 1
This is already being felt by some as one of our spengler's finest efforts, not necessarily for his conclusions but for the breadth and scope of the ideas discussed and the grand, sweeping style:

The 250th anniversary of his birth came and went on November 10 with less attention than it deserved. Schiller created a new kind of tragedy, in which the flaw applies to the people as much as to the protagonists. The hand of destiny is revealed as the tramp of boots on the ground worn by human beings with real needs and passions. The Chorus itself becomes a tragic actor.

Wonderful. So, he didn't take it all with him to First Things .....

Yep, Spengler's essays on cultural history are always worthwhile.

Because his approach to poetry is cerebral, Spengler is tolerant of the inherit ugliness of the German language, which as spoken sounds like someone choking on a kartoffelkloesse. Beautiful poetry for him must be intellectually inferior, thus his disapproval of Burns, Roethke, ee cummings, Thomas, "bloody" Yeats, etc. Surprised he threw a few crumbs Coleridge's way.
